Our Mission

For a woman to lead, a girl must find her voice. Girl Reports gives underserved girls a platform for self-expression, leadership, and skill development through journalism. By writing and publishing their own news magazine, our girl reporters learn critical, transferable skills that open doors to higher education and gainful employment. At Girl Reports, our mission is to empower girls to write their own future.

Girl Reports, Inc. envisions a future in which educated women in the developing world shift the power dynamics of their households and communities, to reflect their right to make decisions about their lives.

Our Goals 

We believe that educating girls and women is the foundation upon which healthy families and communities are built. Girl Reports participants learn bedrock skills that pave the way for increased autonomy and a better quality of life. Skills that result in gainful employment enable girls to contribute financially to their households. This financial contribution provides them with more decision-making power at home and in their communities. Our primary goals are to:   

Learning is our participants’ most important goal. Our girl reporters are eager to acquire new skills and to study at higher levels. They are passionate about equality and they want to contribute to change in their society by serving as positive examples of what educated young women are capable of. 

Our Connection to the Sustainable Development Goals

We believe the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide an excellent model for Girl Reports to follow. Our mission and vision are guided by these goals. Feel free to explore the goals we find most impactful, and why, below.

  • Girl Reports aims to empower young, marginalized girls living in under-served communities. Our program challenges the poverty cycle by providing the training and opportunities young women need to change their futures and their society.

  • The Terrai region of Nepal, the location of our pilot site, has some of the highest rates of child marriage, female illiteracy, and infant and maternal mortality. By writing, organizing, and publishing their own news magazine, our budding journalists learn to ask questions about their society, their rights, and their health. We empower the girls in our program to be the change in their community's health and well-being.

  • Learning is our participants’ most important goal. Our girl reporters are passionate about equality and addressing gender-based discrimination in particular. They see how differently boys are valued and treated, and the many freedoms boys have compared to girls. They want to contribute to change in their society and they want to be part of that change by serving as positive examples of what educated young women are capable of.   Girl Reports bolsters their ability to do this by providing them with a quality curriculum to follow during their time in our program.

  • Our Girl Reporters are acutely aware of the gender inequality in their society. By providing them with a platform for self-expression and skill development, Girl Reports empowers its participants to challenge gender norms within and outside of their community. The Girl Reports program gives them the opportunity to develop their ‘voice’ and share these perspectives with the world.

  • Girl Reports pays its participants for their contributions to magazine publications. This is a way for their families to see a really concrete indication of the importance of what their child is doing in the program. It both teaches our Reporters financial literacy, and allows them to contribute economically to their household using their intelligence. This increases our girls value in the community and enables them to continue to participate in our program.

  • Accountability starts at the grassroots level. Peace and justice follow. The Girl Reports Program gives young women the tools to hold their governments accountable to the wants and needs of all citizens, particularly young women.
